What’s the future of technology?

Help! I’ve agreed to speak on a panel at a local Technology Expo called Future Tech Forum: Tech Leaders Discuss the Future of Technology on the Northcoast. After spending way too long this weekend trying to install Tiger (it’s pretty hard to use an install DVD when you have no DVD drive. Too bad I didn’t realize that when I pre-ordered my copy…), I’m feeling like this may not really be my area of expertise. Couple that with my irrational fear of public speaking, and this is shaping up to be a disaster. So, if you were going to speak to a group that will be made up of about 50% high-school students and 50% other folks about the future of technology, what would you speak about? And what do you think will be the wave of the future?

April 28, 2005 # Rounded Rectangles Resurrected, and the Virtues of

You (meaning the five of you who are repeat visitors) may have noticed the recent redesign, which is about number 12 for this blog. I am bucking the trends again, going with a more complicated layout while most are moving to something more simple. I just couldn’t stand all the f’ing boxes. I thought it was about time to marry the square edges with the curves— kind of a nice metaphor for me, don’t you think? I really wanted some asymmetry, because I felt my designs were tending more and more toward the blocky, minimalist thing. And while that’s a really good solution for something like a web ap, it’s a terrible solution for a site whose sole purpose is to represent me. I have the good fortune to not be seeking employment or clients, and to not be selling anything, so I can make this site as personal as I want without having to worry about branding, watching my language, screwing up my feeds, or providing an inconsistent experience. This site is about me finding my voice, through design, writing, humor, photography, and chemistry. I wanted a layout that represents that complexity, while still focusing on the color schemes generated by the animals, which is a current fascination of mine. So I turned to an oldie but goodie.

John Gruber sums it up

But is it any surprise that a company that is run by jerks-wearing-suits is now targeting the jerks-wearing-suits software market?”

Back Among the Living

I just spent the better part of three days out of commission with some sort of stomach virus. The highlight was sprinting into the corner store to buy Immodium and a half-gallon of Gatorade, and thinking it would be great if just this once I didn’t run into anyone I know. Now that I am re-hydrated, I must confess that there are some parts of these bed-ridden holidays that I enjoy, such as:

  1. Total justification for watching four hours of I Love the 80s” in a row (1984-1987), followed by a much deserved nap.
  2. The half-asleep, half-delirious dreams during these heavily medicated naps on the couch. My favorite this time was uncovering a treasure-trove of rare exotic spices for loan from the public library, which are hidden just behind all the books and available only to those who are crafty enough to figure out that they are there.
  3. The cat curled up beside me, purring as loud as she can for hours on end to make me feel better.
  4. Losing five pounds the healthy easy fast way.
  5. How great that shower feels when I can finally stand up for ten minutes in a row again, and
  6. That secret little buzz from the happy pills when I take them for the first time in three days. So, I am back online. I have two articles half-written and a surprise coming up soon, so stay tuned!
